Where the option exists for a vulnerable migrant to remain in their current location, and they choose to do so, they may require support for integration into that country and community. Otherwise, remaining may increase their vulnerability.

When compared to other migrants, it is likely that a vulnerable migrant will face additional challenges while trying to integrate into a new society, mainly because of their pre-existing vulnerabilities and the challenges they encountered during their migration

Policy Approaches
Effective approaches to migrant integration
  • Assist with the regularization of immigration status.
  • Counter xenophobia and all forms of discrimination against migrants, regardless of their status.
  • Provide referrals for protection and assistance to facilitate long-term support and sustainable reintegration. Adapt the protection to the unique needs of the vulnerable migrant.
  • Implement pre-departure and post-arrival orientation programmes for migrants.
  • Engage with the private sector to facilitate labour market access.
  • Engage with receiving communities and local authorities to help with integration.
  • Engage with the media and other relevant actors to highlight the positive contribution of migrants.
