EMM2.0 face-to-face training in the Bahamas

With the support of the United States Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted needs assessments on migration governance in 17 countries in the Caribbean. These reports provided a panoramic view of migration governance in each of these States, with a focus on the policies and practices that regulate migration and mobility.

In the case of The Bahamas, immigrationhas influenced the development of the country across various sectors. Evenwhilereliable data is not readily available, it is estimated that 50,000 Haitian migrants live inTheBahamas, representingup to16percentof the total population and by far the largest migrant group in the country. Haitians in the Bahamas face myriad challenges that affect their ability to fulfil the most basic of their human rights.

In order to enhance the migration management knowledge and efforts of state institutions, IOM utilized its curriculum on the Essentials of Migration Management (EMM2.0). The first training for policymakers was held in September 2022 in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Immigration, the Immigration Department and the University of the Bahamas. In 2023, a second EMM2.0 training was organized from 27 to 29 July 2023. The training was facilitated by the manager of IOM African Capacity Building Center (ACBC), Jonathan Martens, IOM programme officer, Allegra Sary from HQ and Eraina Yaw, deputy sub-regional coordinator for the Caribbean and head of office of IOM Guyana.

Seventeen government officials in the Bahamas with migration-related policy functions attended the training, representing various Ministries and Departments, including: Education, Foreign Affairs, Labour, National Security, Social Services, Office of the Attorney General, Bahamas Immigration Department, Royal Bahamas Police Force and Royal Bahamas Defense Force.
