With the support of the United States Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), a needs assessment was conducted on migration governance in 17 countries in the Caribbean. These reports provided a panoramic view of migration governance in each of these States, with a focus on the policies and practices that regulate migration and mobility. In the case of the Bahamas, immigration has influenced the country’s development across various sectors. It is estimated that up to 16 per cent of the total population are migrants facing myriad challenges that affect their ability to fulfil the most basic of their human rights. In order to enhance the knowledge and efforts of State institutions in managing their migration realities, a second training on the Essentials of Migration Management (EMM2.0) was held in collaboration with the Bahamas’ Ministry of Labour and Immigration.
Seventeen government officials in the Bahamas with migration-related policy functions attended the training, representing various Ministries and Departments, including: Education, Foreign Affairs, Labour, National Security, Social Services, Office of the Attorney General, Bahamas Immigration Department, Royal Bahamas Police Force and Royal Bahamas Defense Force.
